A few days ago, I came across a quote by Warren Buffett that struck me deeply: “Most of the time, the result doesn’t depend on how hard you work, but on the boat you’re in.”
This reflection made me think about how often we focus on hard work, on the number of hours we dedicate to a project, without ever questioning whether we are truly investing our time in the right direction.
The real question is: “In those hours, am I working on the right boat?”
Imagine two people working just as hard.
On one side, we have the first employee of Airbnb, who chose to be part of a start-up with immense growth and innovation potential.
On the other, we have the first employee of a small local business, equally committed but working in an environment with limited resources and possibilities. Both work with dedication, but the fundamental difference lies in the context in which they find themselves, which can ultimately determine their long-term success.
This same logic applies to relationships. You can invest time, energy, and resources in a relationship that ultimately proves to be unsuccessful. Similarly, you can invest in a relationship that, with the same commitment, turns out to be the right one for you.
In the end, it’s easy to find ourselves trapped in jobs and situations that seem promising but fail to yield the desired results, leading us to a life of dissatisfaction, instability, and a lack of perspective.
Unfortunately, we can only recognize the true value of that boat in hindsight, once failure has already revealed itself, until the day we finally arrive at that “project”—whether it’s a relationship, a job opportunity, or an initiative—where, with the same effort and hard work, we finally achieve the result we had been seeking.
Don’t get me wrong, persistence is the key to success in any project, but always make sure that your project has perspective, that it’s a boat capable of carrying you all the way to port.

Sei sulla barca giusta?
Un po’ di giorni fa mi sono imbattuta in una frase di Warren Buffett che mi ha colpito molto: “La maggior parte delle volte, il risultato non dipende da quanto lavori duro, ma dalla barca sulla quale stai.”
Questa riflessione mi ha fatto pensare a quanto spesso ci concentriamo sul duro lavoro, sulla quantità di ore che dedichiamo a un progetto, senza chiederci se stiamo davvero investendo il nostro tempo nella direzione giusta.
La vera domanda è: “In quelle ore, sto lavorando sulla barca giusta?”
Immaginate due persone che lavorano altrettanto intensamente.
Da un lato, abbiamo il primo dipendente di Airbnb, che ha scelto di essere parte di una start-up con enormi potenzialità di crescita e innovazione.
Dall’altro, il primo dipendente di una piccola impresa locale, impegnato nello stesso modo, ma in un contesto con risorse e possibilità limitate. Entrambi lavorano con dedizione, ma la differenza fondamentale sta nel contesto in cui si trovano, che può determinare il loro successo a lungo termine.
Questa stessa logica si applica anche alle relazioni. Puoi investire tempo, energie e risorse in una relazione che alla fine si rivela fallimentare. Allo stesso modo, puoi investire in una relazione che, pur con lo stesso impegno, risulta essere quella giusta per te.
In fondo, è facile ritrovarsi intrappolati in lavori e situazioni che sembrano promettenti, ma che non portano i risultati sperati e ci conducono a una vita dove siamo insoddisfatti, precari e senza prospettiva.
Sfortunatamente, possiamo riconoscere il vero valore di quella barca solo a posteriori, quando il fallimento si è già palesato, fino al giorno in cui, finalmente, arriviamo a quel “progetto” – che può essere una relazione, un’opportunità lavorativa o un’iniziativa – dove, con lo stesso impegno e lo stesso lavoro duro, otteniamo finalmente il risultato che cercavamo.
Non fraintendermi, l’ostinazione è l’elemento chiave per riuscire in qualsiasi progetto ma accertati sempre che il tuo progetto abbia prospettiva, che sia una barca capace di riportarti fino al porto.
